4 Mindfulness Strategies to Help You Achieve Your Goals
When we begin our goal-getting journey, we must start by analyzing our mindset. Specifically, how we view and treat ourselves. Being mindful will not only provide us with healthier mindsets, but it will also allow us to tune out the negativity and naysayers. Here are 4 mindfulness strategies that will help you achieve any goal.
#1 Engage in Positive Self-Talk
What are some of the things you say to yourself? Do you use encouraging phrases like “I can do this,” and “I can overcome this obstacle”? Do you think of yourself as a capable individual, able to learn new skills and try new things? Positive self-talk is a form of mindfulness that can encourage and motivate you, even when it seems like you don’t have a strong support system. Positive self-talk is a skill we must actively use. It is not something that is mastered overnight, rather a skill that we must constantly utilize and improve upon. Think of positive self-talk as a shield against the daggers
of doubt and negative self-talk that will try to keep you from achieving your goals.
#2 Beware of self-sabotage.
Self-sabotage is a silent killer when it comes to attaining our goals. You may not even recognize you’re doing it. What is self-sabotage? Self-sabotaging is consciously or unconsciously taking steps to prevent you from reaching your goal. Conscious steps that could stop you from attaining your goal may include not applying for your dream job because you don’t think you’ll get it, or not investing in equipment because you think you’ll fail. Unconscious steps may include thinking you are not good enough, or that you will never reach success. Throughout your goal-getting journey, it is important to frequently check in with yourself to ensure you are not engaging in any self-sabotaging behaviors.
#3 Alleviate Anxiety and Stress.
While you’re making progress with your goal, you may experience stress or anxiety. These are normal and common feelings that occur throughout life, especially when you are experiencing a change. Common methods to relieve anxiety and stress include deep breathing, mindfulness meditation, exercising, and getting enough sleep. You can also participate in your favorite self-care activities, like listening to music, painting, reading, or journaling. Properly managing stress and anxiety will allow you to fully commit and follow-through with your goals.
#4 Don’t be afraid to re-evaluate.
It is easy to become overwhelmed when you start your goal-getting journey. Focusing so much on your end result can leave you feeling pressured and stressed. When you start to feel overwhelmed, don’t panic. Instead, take a step back and re-evaluate your course of action. I give my clients the acronym, F.O.R.M., which stands for: Feeling Overwhelmed? Reset, and place into Manageable buckets. If you begin to feel overloaded with the tasks you need to complete, stop, reset, and prioritize your tasks into “manageable buckets” that will work for you.
No matter the goal, these mindfulness strategies will help you stay positive, confident, and motivated in your journey. We must believe in our dreams and goals, but most of all, we must believe in ourselves and our ability to achieve. We are all capable of attaining our goals!
